Must-sees & Must-dos

The talented Bawa brothers

Geoffrey Bawa graduated in architecture at the age of 38. Of all his work, he leaves us with his private property Lunuganga, a building constructed on the fringes of the lagoon near Bentota. Exuding tropical modernism, this house blazes a trail for sustainable architecture and has won over 70 architectural and environmental awards around the world.

His brother Bevis Bawa is a sculptor and landscape architect. Brief Garden was his sanctuary in the hinterland not far from Bentota. Having opened its doors to Sri Lankan artists and some famous guests (Lawrence Olivier, Vivian Leigh, Agatha Christie), these days guests can tour the gardens during the heat of the day and enjoy the refreshing sight of numerous ponds and fountains. His varied approach to plants means that this garden fuses stunning English, French and Japanese style decorative touches.

Circumstances permitting, there might also be a stop off at Galapatha Raja Maha Viharaya temple and at Aluthgama market (on Monday afternoons).
